Tommy is enjoying life in Japan. At first he growled at everyone who spoke to him in Japanese, but he's slowly gotten used to the sound of the language and has even picked up a few phrases. The first thing he learned to say was "Kawaii ne!" which means "How cute!" (he and his sister hear that phrase frequently). At times we wish everyone would quit thinking he is so cute, because it has really gone to his head---he's quite a little showoff and sometimes gets himself into trouble when cuteness becomes borderline obnoxiousness.

Of course, Tommy doesn't spend all day out in public hearing how cute he is; he spends most of his time at home, engrossed with his engines and their many adventures. Thomas the Tank Engine and friends are not just Tommy's favorite imaginary characters; they're his passion, his obsession, his raison d'etre. We're glad he has so much fun playing with his engines, but sometimes wonder if he will ever show an interest in anything else! Perhaps we sealed his fate when we named him Thomas.
